So in my previous post I’ve talked about how good Lor Mee and Hokkien Mee are in my maternal hometown Ulu Yam, so now I’m going to talk a bit on my other hometown – Melaka!
You’ve probably guessed that Melaka is famous for nyonya food, but there is one soul food that everyone loves – Chicken Rice Balls.
But why Chicken Rice Balls? Why not just Chicken Rice?
Random person

To me, Chicken Rice Ball gives me the sentimental, mellow feelings of childhood, but if you aren’t a local, the texture and flavor is something that you should really give a try! Easy to bite, great fragrance, and you can even eat it without anything!
It also feels very different than just eating chicken rice. I like chicken rice from Ipoh, but it hits differently when it comes in the form of spheres in Melaka. Though on a side note, I eat the chicken rice balls with only the shop’s chilli sauce (like really, a LOT).
There are many restaurants in Melaka, but there are three that I will always recommend! Since it is also possible to travel across borders now, why not driving your way to Melaka for some good food?
So here are some of the places for Melaka chicken rice balls that I would recommend as a local!
1st choice: Even great for your Muslim friends – Ee Ji Ban (一级棒)

Ee Ji Ban (or 一级棒) means it’s top-notch good! Also if you understand Japanese you probably know it sounds similar to ‘ichiban’ which means ‘number 1’. I’d say they are good too!
Reasons?
- It’s halal
- It’s flavorful (more on the salty side but that’s what I like too)
- Mix roasted chicken + steamed chicken for the best of both worlds
- Also offers Nyonya dishes just eat them all

p/s: At least order 10 rice balls! Otherwise the rice is just the normal rice. But then again, will 10 even be enough? (I probably need at least 30 and could still fit another bunch).

Choice for Vegetarians: Shui Xian Vegetarian Restaurant (水仙素食园)

I have a vegetarian relative, so sometimes we come here for food!
Isn’t it surprising that you can enjoy chicken rice ball in vegetarian style? Even if you are a non-vegetarian, you can enjoy the vege chicken rice ball!
Shui Xian is a vegetarian restaurant, so everything is vegetarian – including the ‘chicken’ you see!

Because it is vegetarian, there is no other place that can replicate the same taste as Shui Xian offers. Their chilli sauce is also special and tastes decent! Not to mention, their prices are also very affordable!

Choice for Everyone Else: Huang Chang Chicken Rice (煌昌海南鸡饭)

Not so far from the famous Jonker Street, this is the place that my family and I will always ‘tapau’ at least 250 chicken rice balls to bring back to KL. (We are a family of 4).
Reasons:
- Creamier rice ball texture
- Smaller in size, easier to bite
- Has a ginger taste, then mixing with soy sauce
- Firm texture, doesn’t flop easily with fork
- Super juicy steamed chicken (my dad’s fav!)
- Very lit chilli sauce – not your typically watered-down sauce. Would buy (bottles) from them to bring back to KL every time.

Location: BB-376, Taman Melaka Baru, Batu Berendam, 75350 Melaka, Malaysia (Google Maps) Contact: +606-317 0299 Opening Hours: Friday to Wednesday: 7:15am – 3:00pm Closed on: Thursday
So here you go! My best list of chicken rice balls in Melaka that will suit most people!
